In 2018, I worked on the content development and design of an exciting new piece of educational material for potential and existing Small Scale Growers in the Noodsberg region of Kwazulu Natal. These Growers supply sugarcane to Illovo Sugar's Noodsberg Mill, and are supported through various initiatives run by Illovo Sugar South Africa.
Intense content creation with local SMEs resulted in a handbook and roadmap poster, produced in English and Zulu, detailing all the basics the learner would need to begin farming sugarcane with the support of Illovo extension officers.
I made a very intentional choice with this project to avoid use of icons (which are often understood only through context), and to partner with an illustrator who could depict more realistic scenarios that the Grower could relate to, and imagine themselves in. Visuals were created from real-life tips and tricks, such as using a matchbox to gauge the height of your sugar cane when preparing for herbicide application.
The material has subsequently reached 600 local growers, and is seen as the go-to guide for beginning the journey as a Small Scale Grower.
